There are mainly two types of varnishes. Alcohol-based varnishes are obtained by dissolving natural or synthetic resins in a volatile solvent like alcohol.

Oleoresin varnishes, which are more resistant to heat and abrasion, are a mixture of resins dissolved in turpentine or petroleum and drying oils. 

A resin dissolved in any solvent that protects the surfaces of objects from atmospheric effects and provides a shiny appearance.

Varnish is mostly used in woodworking to ensure the brightness of furniture, enhancing the appearance by better revealing the patterns of the wood.

In varnished furniture, carved parts become more eye-catching with light reflections and shadowing.

To achieve good results in varnishing, certain special conditions must be met.

The varnish must be fluid, have uniform density and color all around, create a smooth surface where applied, dry quickly, show the patterns of the surface it is applied to, and be resistant to atmospheric conditions.

The type of varnish varies in the resin and solvent it contains according to its types.

Varnishes, known as varnish spirits, which create a thin transparent layer where applied; are obtained by dissolving lacquers, rosin, urea formaldehyde, vinyl resins, acrylic acid resins, and chlorinated, film-forming substances like rubber in turpentine, toluene, naphtha, and alcohol.

These types of varnishes are widely used to coat papers, traffic road signs, insect-repellent paints on ships, etc.

If varnishes are made with resin, oil, coloring agents, and solvents, types of varnish that are quite resistant to atmospheric conditions, suitable for environmental conditions like vibration, water, and chemicals, and have a wide range of use can be obtained.

Furniture varnishes, floor varnishes, varnishes used as insulators in electrical devices, and printing varnishes are of this kind.
